PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET oil glazing gel Product Description A fast drying medium that gives a lasting brilliance to oils. Soft gel consistency designed for more robust glazing. Extends colours whilst holding brush marks. Product Code: 030 Constituents: Alkali Refined Linseed Oil, Distilled Gum Turpentine, Damar Resin, Fumed Silica, Cobalt Drier. Product Application Langridge Oil Glazing Gel was developed as a multi-puropse medium to be added to oil colours in quantities at the discretion of the artist. It can be used as an all-round flow medium for extending colours. Fast drying to allow for the rapid build up of paint layers. Oil Glazing Gel is a thixotropic medium. Its’ naturally state is as a soft gel. When mixed with paint and applied vigorously with brushes or palette knife the medium becomes highly fluid allowing easy brushing. As soon as the medium stops being moved it immediately ‘sets up’ and does not drip or lose its’ position. Artists can utilise this high degree of manipulation for a very robust brushmarking technique without the thick application of paint. As more medium is added to the oil colour so the opacity of the resulting paint will be reduced. Bold glazes can be applied that can hold marks including brush, sgraffitto and frottage techniques. The layer of transparent paint (or glaze) should sit on top of the existing painted areas not unlike a layer of coloured film, that is, altering the colour of oil colours beneath without obscuring the form. The Damar resin content gives brilliance to these glazes and allows for extraordinary luminosity as light passes through the glaze to a traditionally bright base colour. It may be easier to describe a glaze as a non-reversable (due to the oil content), varnish with clarity and luminosity as opposed to an oil medium with a resin addition. Langridge Oil Glazing Gel has a high Linseed Oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for underpainting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top. Note: Over-use of Oil Glazing Gel with pale colours may cause yellowing. Dries to a gloss finish. ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION Altering the reflective finish. The addition of Wax Painting Paste to Oil GlazingGel can reduce the gloss finish normally associated with an oil paint medium. Mix together 1 part Wax Painting Paste to 4 parts Oil Glazing Gel for a satin finish. A higher proportion of wax medium may be added for extra matte effects. The addition of Wax Painting Paste will give more body to the medium, so the artists technique should allow for this in application. As an Oil Scumble for decorative effects Oil GlazingGel can be added to oil colours for making oil scumbles. These are coloured glazes applied to walls and furniture where combs, brushes or rags are dragged through the wet glaze to remove the colour leaving a decorative pattern. Also used for creating fake wood or marble effects. Mix 1 part Oil Glazing Gel with 1 part artists oil colour and thin as necessary to the consistency of thin cream. Apply to sealed surfaces.
