PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET

glaze medium

Product Description

A resin rich oil medium that gives oil colours increased translucency. Perfect for the creation of optical depth and soft suffusions of colour.

Product Code: 004

Constituents: Stand Oil (40 Poise), Distilled Gum Turpentine, Damar Varnish, Cobalt Drier.

Product Application

Langridge Glaze Medium is added to oil colours to increase translucency for traditional glazing techniques.
The layer of transparent paint (or glaze) should sit on top of the existing painted areas not unlike a layer of coloured film, that is, altering the colour of oil colours beneath without obscuring the form.

The Damar resin content gives brilliance to these glazes and allows for extraordinary luminosity as light passes through the glaze to a traditionally white or bright base colour.
It may be easier to describe a glaze as a non-reversable (due to the oil content), non-yellowing varnish with clarity and luminosity as opposed to an oil medium with a resin addition.

Very refined modelling is achieved using glazes on top of broad underpainting which has been employed to mark out the basic form in light and shadow.

For artists who wish to apply clean, bright glazes, it is recommended choosing transparent pigment based colours.

Because Langridge Glaze Medium is highly fluid it can be used for the controlled application of fine detail, however it is versatile enough to be used for broader techniques such as a watercolour style ‘wash’ effects without losing richness and vibrancy. Diluting purely with solvents such as Gum Turpentine can easily underbind paint and lead to a dull, dry lifeless film with potential for dusting or flaking off.
Because of the damar content broad ‘washes’ using Glaze Medium have more ‘slip’ than Langridge Underpainting Medium in application.

The Stand Oil base ensures pale colours stay bright whilst deep tones are enriched.

Langridge Painting Medium has a medium Stand Oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for underpainting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top.

Dries to a satin finish.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Apparent darkening of oil paintings kept in dark storage.

When a painting has been stored for a period of time in darkness the artwork will darken. This can be reversed by re-exposure to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight will not reverse the long term effects of oil paint films darkening. Any reversal of darkening will occur within 48 hours of light exposure. Do not over expose artwork to excessive light for long periods of time, The pigments used in the oil paints, especially non-lightfast colours may fade.

WORKING PROPERTIES

Thinning
For best results thin with Distilled Gum Turpentine. However, Artists White Spirit or Langridge Low Toxic Solvent may be substituted. The use of the latter solvents will tend to reduce the fatness of stroke and the oil film will dry with less richness due to the partial destruction of the paint film.

Appearance
Langridge Glaze Medium is a pale amber colour liquid with characteristic gum turpentine odour.
The colour of the oil will not effect the oil colours with which it is mixed.

Clean Up
Clean brushes with any artists’ solvent (eg Gum Turpentine, Low Toxic Solvent, etc.). For further washing apply a small quantity of Marseille or other pure olive oil soap and massage the bristles of the brush to release any remaining colour. Wash thoroughly in warm water. Leave to fully dry before using for oil colours.

Drying Times
12-24 hours to touch dry.
Full film drying 3-6 months
