Product Description

Low-toxicity solvent (odourless) based flow medium.Non-yellowing medium added to oil paints to improve paint handling and promote the brushing out of colours.

Constituents: Stand Oil (40 Poise), Low Toxic Solvent, Alkali Refined Linseed Oil, Cobalt Drier.

Product Application

Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium has been constructed as an alternative to traditional turpentine based painting mediums for artists concerned about exposure to harmful solvents.

Because Langridge Low Toxic Solvent has a Permisable Exposure Level (PEL) higher than other solvents the artists exposure will not be as harmful in comparison to traditional solvents.Langridge still recommends the use of good studio ventilation, a minimum of two open windows, preferably a properly installed exhaust system.

May be added to oil colours in quantities at the discretion of the artist.Initially small additions will purely aid the flow qualities of existing oil colours.As more medium is added to the oil colour so the opacity of the resulting paint will be reduced.By adding Low Toxic Painting Medium in quantities over 70% coloured transparent glazes are created.For artists who wish to apply clean, bright glazes, it is recommended choosing transparent pigment based colours.

After 15-25 minutes of applying Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium the surface will set-up to a tack that grabs any succeeding brush strokes. The wet, but tacky, paint surface can be readily painted into,even quite aggresively, without moving or disturbing the areas of fresh paint underneath.This allows for a wet-in-wet technique with very controlled manipulation of paint including soft blending.The Stand Oil base ensures pale colours stay bright whilst deep tones are enriched.

Stand oil used in Low Toxic Painting Medium has pronounced levelling qualities. If more than 50% is added, the resulting paint film will exhibit an enamel finish with little or no physically raised brushmarks.

Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium has a high Stand Oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for underpainting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top.

Dries to a gloss finish.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

For the prevention of sinking-in of paint.

If a support for painting (eg canvas) is poorly primed, oil colours will ‘sink-in’ to the surface and exhibit a dull and lifeless colour reflection. The oil from the paint is absorbed into the support, leaving the pigment underbound. Take 2 parts Low Toxic Painting Medium and mix with 1 part Low Toxic Solvent and apply, with a cloth, by rubbing into the support as a very thin layer. Allow 2 weeks for thorough drying.

Altering the reflective finish.

The addition of Wax Painting Paste to Low Toxic Painting Medium can reduce the gloss finish normally associated with an oil paint medium. Mix together 1 part Wax Painting Paste to 4 parts Low Toxic Painting Medium for a satin finish. A higher proportion of wax medium may be added for extra matte effects.The addition of Wax Painting Paste will give more body to the medium, so the artists technique should allow for this in application.

Adhesion problems.

When very fluid glazes are applied on top of a layer of glossy paint in which there is a high proportion of Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium there may be issues regarding adhesion. The application of a very thin layer of Retouch Varnish to the touch dry paint surface will help with the adhesion of succeeding paint layers.

To even out the final reflective quality of the painting.

Due to differences in the gloss or matteness of individual paints a finished picture generally has a range of reflective finishes within it. If these are very pronounced, a picture varnish cannot even these differences out.Take 1 part Low Toxic Painting Medium and mix with 2 parts Odourless Solvent and apply as a very thin layer with a varnish brush. Leave for 4 days till fully touch dry.This process is not providing a removable artists’ varnish, so the application of Retouch Varnish is stillrecommended. After 3-6 months a final picture varnish of the desired matte or gloss quality can be applied.

WORKING PROPERTIES

Thinning
For best results thin with Distilled Gum Turpentine. However, Artists White Spirit or Langridge Low Toxic Solvent may be substituted. The use of the latter solvents will tend to reduce the fatness of stroke and the oil film will dry with less richness due to the partial destruction of the paint film.

Appearance
Langridge Low Toxic Paint Medium is a pale amber colour liquid with characteristic linseed odour.
The colour of the oil will not effect the oil colours with which it is mixed.

Clean Up
Clean brushes with any artists’ solvent (eg Low Toxic Solvent, Gum Turpentine, etc.). For further washing apply a small quantity of Marseille or other pure olive oil soap and massage the bristles of the brush to release any remaining colour. Wash thoroughly in warm water. Leave to fully dry before using for oil colours.

Drying Times
24-48 hours to touch dry. Any airflow over the surface will evaporate the solvent more rapidly which will reduce drying times.
Full film drying 3-6 months
