PRODUCT INFORMATION SHEET

low toxic gel medium

Product Description

A fast drying medium that gives a lasting brilliance to oils.Soft gel consistency designed for more robust glazing. Extends colours whilst holding brush marks.

Product Code: 010

Constituents: Alkali Refined Linseed Oil, Low Toxic Solvent, Fumed Silica, Cobalt Drier.

Product Application

Fast drying soft gel medium for extending colours. Based on odourless Low Toxic Solvent.Allows for the rapid build up of paint layers. When mixed with paint and applied, the medium becomes highly fluid allowing for easy brushing.Low Toxic is a thixotropic medium. Its’ naturally state is as a soft gel. When mixed with paint and applied vigorously with brush or palette knife the medium becomes highly fluid allowing easy brushing. As soon as the medium stops being moved it immediately ‘sets up’ and does not drip or lose its’ position. Artists can utilise this high degree of manipulation for a very robust brushmarking technique without the thick application of paint.Bold glazes can be applied that can hold marks including brush, sgraffitto and frottage techniques.

Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium has a high Linseed Oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for underpainting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top.

Dries to a satin finish.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

For the prevention of sinking-in of paint.

If a support for painting (eg canvas) is poorly primed, oil colours will ‘sink-in’ to the surface and exhibit a dull and lifeless colour reflection. The oil from the paint is absorbed into the support, leaving the pigment underbound. Take 2 parts Low Toxic Painting Medium and mix with 1 part Low Toxic Solvent and apply, with a cloth, by rubbing into the support as a very thin layer. Allow 2 weeks for thorough drying.

Altering the reflective finish.

The addition of Wax Painting Paste to Low Toxic Painting Medium can reduce the gloss finish normally associated with an oil paint medium. Mix together 1 part Wax Painting Paste to 4 parts Low Toxic Gel Medium for a satin/matt finish. A higher proportion of wax medium may be added for extra matte effects. The addition of Wax Painting Paste will give more body to the medium, so the artists technique should allow for this in application.

WORKING PROPERTIES

Thinning
For best results thin with Distilled Gum Turpentine. However, Artists White Spirit or Langridge Low Toxic Solvent may be substituted. The use of the latter solvents will tend to reduce the fatness of stroke and the oil film will dry with less richness due to the partial destruction of the paint film.

Appearance
Langridge Low Toxic Gel Medium is a golden colour soft gel with characteristic linseed odour.
The colour of the oil will slightly effect the oil colours with which it is mixed.

Clean Up
Clean brushes with any artists’ solvent (eg Gum Turpentine, Low Toxic Solvent, etc.). For further washing apply a small quantity of Marseille or other pure olive oil soap and massage the bristles of the brush to release any remaining colour. Wash thoroughly in warm water. Leave to fully dry before using for oil colours.

Drying Times
18-36 hours to touch dry. Any airflow over the surface will evaporate the solvent more rapidly which will reduce drying times.
Full film drying 3-6 months
