Antique Metal Finishes

Create genuine antique metallic finishes of red Rust or the green patina of Verdigris.
These paint products can be applied to walls, furniture, frames,
boxes & objet d’art. Seal surface prior to use with acrylic sealer.

Rust Base

Paint two coats of Rust Base onto sealed surface.
When dry wash a coat of Oxidising Patina over rust surface.
Genuine rust finish will appear in 1 hour.
Further coats of Oxidising Patina may be applied to accentuate the red rust effect.
The finished surface does not need sealing,
but if desired, use a shellac based varnish.

Verdigris Base

Paint two coats of Verdigris Base (old penny bronze colour) onto sealed
surface, leave to dry, then apply Oxidising Patina.
Genuine verdigris finish appears in 1 hour.
Oxidising Patina may be spattered or sponged on for more varied finish.

Oxidising Patina

Freshly gilded surfaces are extraordinarily bright and often
need a subtler finish with the aid of a chemical oxidant.
Oxidising Patina can be applied to a range of metal leaf to produce fascinating,
rich effects and seemingly ancient surfaces.

To create the rainbow effects of variegated leaf, warm the Oxidising Patina
by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water. Apply onto Imitation Gold Leaf with a brush,
wait until the desired colour appears
(approx. 15 seconds for yellows, 30 seconds for blues and magentas)
and neutralise by placing a water-soaked cloth onto the surface.
Neutralising will prevent further patination.
Seal, when dry, with GiltLac or shellac varnish.

To create the soft green effect of Verdigris, wash a generous amount
of Oxidising Patina onto Imitation Gold or Copper leaf and leave
at least 12 hours for the effect to take place.
Keep the cupric as wet as long as possible by keeping out of warm places.
The oxidation process cannot take place when the
Oxidising Patina has dried.
Varnish verdigris only with lacquer or shellac or it will dissappear!

To create Italian Pitted Silver apply a weak Oxidising Patina solution
(add 2 parts water to 1 part Oxidising Patina)
to genuine Silver Leaf and lightly sprinkle on salt grains.
Very quickly the salt grains will turn black, neutralise immediately
with a water-soaked cloth onto the surface to prevent further patination.
