Gum Arabic
Also known as Gum Acacia, Gum Arabic is the product of various acacia trees grown in tropical Asia, Africa and Australia. The best grades have always been obtained from Africa. Gum Arabic has many uses including medicine, food and technical purposes in the arts where its uses include:
- Binder in Watercolour
- Binder in some Tempera Mediums
- Strong Adhesive
- Glue Size
- Binder in Artists' Dry Pastels
How to Make Gum Arabic Solution
Gum Arabic should be dissolved by leaving it overnight in seven times its’ weight of distilled water.
Be sure to cover the container whilst Gum Arabic is dissolving as this will aid the process. The gum will dissolve between 12 and 24 hours.
The solution should then be strained through a cloth to remove impurities.
Preservative should be added to prevent spoilage.
