Distilled Gum Turpentine

Distilled Gum Turpentine is made by distilling the thick resinous sap of certain varieties of pine trees, thus giving turpentine its pronounced odour.

Distilled Gum Turpentine (Gum Turpentine, Pure Gum Turpentine) is preferred as a solvent and diluent to artists' mediums above mineral spirits or mineral turpentines because of its ability to "fatten" oils rather than to "cut" them. Mineral solvents will tend to leave a dull lifeless paint film when it dries where Distilled Gum Turpentine will resist this tendency. It is also the only solvent that will successfully and completely disolve Damar Resin, an important ingredient in many artists' mediums.

Prolonged exposure to Distilled Gum Turpentine may be harmful because of the high percentage of turpenes released during its rapid drying process. We would advese against unnecessary overuse and keeping your workspace well ventilated at all times. You can find a material safety data sheet on our MSDS page. If you are concerned about the potential hazards of using Distilled Gum Turpentine we suggest using Langridge Odourless Solvent.
