Damar Resin

Damar Varnish

Take 100gm of Damar resin and wrap in a muslin bag. Tie with string leaving a little length for hanging the bag. Suspend in a screw-lid jar containing 170 mls of Distilled Gum Turpentine, making sure the bag is hanging freely and not touching the bottom. Keep lid on jar to prevent the turpentine from evaporating. The resin will dissolve in 24 hours, but can be accelerated if stirred. This concentration is known as a 5lb cut and should be should be thinned with turpentine to a brushable consistency for use as a final picture varnish.
