Apply milky ‘Base Coat’ over surface with soft brush. Wait till it turns clear (allow 30 minutes).
Now paint over the top with ‘Top Coat’ and leave to dry. Be sure there are no areas of the ‘Base Coat’ left exposed. The craquelure will appear after 12 hours although very
warm conditions can speed this up considerably.
If after 12 hours there is no visible cracking gently warm thesurface to help the effect take place.
Brushes should be washed out in warm water immediately.
To highlight the craquelure, mix oil paint with White Spirit (1:1) then gently brush over the complete surface. Once the thinned oil paint is touch dry (approx. 15 mins.) gently wipe the surface clean with a soft rag leaving the oil colour only in the cracks.
Leave for 24 hours to dry and seal with oil based varnish.
The size of crackle can be adjusted with different techniques;
To get longer, broader craquelure.
(Tip 1) The slower the drying time after applying the ‘Top Coat’ the larger the craquelure (Place drying object in a cool place.)
(Tip 2) Apply a coat of ‘Base Coat’, wait till it turns clear, then reapply a second coat of ‘Base Coat’. Again, wait till it turns clear and apply one coat of the ‘Top Coat’ as normal.
To create smaller craquelure
Wait until the ‘Top Coat’ is touch dry and then warm the surface with a hair dryer.
If not satisfied with the finish, wash ‘Top Coat’ off under gently running warm water (Do not touch exposed ‘Base Coat’ with dirty hands!), repeat application of the ‘Base Coat’ and complete the process as before.
