Cracking Medium

For imitating the cracked and peeling paint finish of old furniture and timberwork. Langridge Cracking Medium is a decorative product for use with artists’ acrylics or household emulsion paint.

Paint the base colour in acrylics or emulsion. Allow to dry, then apply a thin, even coat of Cracking Medium. Allow 30 minutes for drying.

Wash brushes in warm water.

Once dry you can immediately apply your chosen top colour with acrylic or emulsion paint. But because the Langridge Cracking Medium is based on natural gums it can be applied, left to dry and not returned to for hours, days, even months before applying the top colour.

Apply top paint with a soft brush, sponge or roller. Work rapidly, cracking starts immediately and painting back over areas where cracking has started to take place
tends to muddy the finish.

The size of cracks depends on the thickness of the top paint, the thicker it is the larger the cracking. Applying hot air from a hair dryer whilst the paint is initially drying can also accentuate the size of cracking.

For a severe weathered effect leave to dry and then gently wipe surface with a water soaked rag. This will lift strips of paint away leaving ‘islands’ of cracked paint behind.

Allow 3 hours for drying before sealing the surface with an oil based varnish.
